The excursion begins with a visit to the Amari Solid Waste Management Facility, a modern environmental infrastructure serving the wider region of Rethymno. The facility plays a key role in the integrated management of municipal solid waste, applying contemporary methods for waste reception, sorting, treatment, and environmentally sound disposal.
During the visit, participants will gain an overview of the facility’s operational framework and its contribution to sustainable waste management practices at a regional level. Emphasis is placed on reducing environmental impact, improving resource efficiency, and supporting circular economy principles through structured waste processing systems.
This technical visit provides valuable insight into real-world applications of environmental policy and infrastructure planning in Crete.

Following the environmental visit, the excursion continues to the historic Monastery of Arkadi, one of Crete’s most important religious, cultural, and historical monuments. The monastery is internationally recognized both for its architectural significance and for its pivotal role in Cretan history, particularly during the 19th century struggles for independence.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the monastery complex, including its main church, courtyards, and exhibition spaces, while gaining insight into its historical, spiritual, and symbolic importance. The visit offers a meaningful cultural complement to the technical focus of the excursion.
The excursion concludes with a visit to the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna, located near one of Crete’s most significant archaeological sites. The museum presents findings from systematic excavations of the ancient city of Eleutherna, offering a comprehensive view of life in Crete from prehistoric times through the Byzantine period.
Through its modern exhibition design and well-documented artifacts, the museum highlights social organization, burial practices, art, and daily life in antiquity. This final stop connects the themes of sustainability, landscape, and human activity over time, providing a broader cultural and historical perspective to the excursion.
